Mystra in Greece

By Seif Kamel
The ancient town of Mysta is among the most distinctive monuments for
tourists to visit in Greece. Located in Peloponnese, it was an important
Byzantine stronghold in the Middle Ages. Today, it is one of the
interesting historical sites of the country.
Included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites, Mystra was deserted
during the Ottoman rule of Greece. Afterwards, many historians
believed that it was the remains of the ancient town of Sparta. However,
historical records afterwards asserted that it this ancient settlement
established by the Byzantine around the beginning of the 14 th century
AD.
The most notable places to explore during a tour to Mystra include the
Metropolis, the Monastery of Peribleptos, the Evangelistria's church, the
Hodigitria church, and Despot's Palace. Many travel packages to Greece
today offer a tour of this ancient magnificent town.
