The Monastery of Rila in Bulgaria

By Seif Kamel
The Monastery of Rila is perhaps among the most distinctive
monuments tourists who travel to Bulgaria are keen to visit. It is, in fact,
the largest and most impressive monastery in the country.
Established in the 10 th century, the monastery was named after its
establisher, Ivan of Rila, who died around the middle of the 10 th century.
The Monastery of Rila is included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Many travel packages to Bulgaria include a visit to the monastery.
Among the most impressive sections of Monastery of Rila, there is the
main church which was built around 1000 years after the establishment
of the monastery. Famous for its multiple domes and double chapels to
the side, the church is also renowned for its wonderful wooden works.
