The Calakmul Archeological Site in Mexico

By Seif Kamel
Calakmul is one of the richest archeological sites in Mexico.
Situated near the borders with Guatemala, this site belongs to the
famous Maya civilization. Calakmul was among the most
flourishing towns of the Maya tribes and controlled a large area of
land.
Calakmul had a population of more than 50,00 people and it
contained more than 6000 buildings. The town actually used to
host the largest pyramid after built by the Maya in America.
Today, many travel packages to Mexico include a visit to
Calakmul.
This great pyramid, which is the highlight of the town today was
over 45 meters in height. It used to host four tombs. As many other
establishments by the Mayans, the pyramid was enlarged by
building on it until it held the surface area of 2 square kilometers.
