The Sumela Monastery in Turkey

By Seif Kamel
The Sumela Monastery is factually among the most distinctive
historical sites in Turkey. Perhaps its unique location, historical
significance, or its outstanding design and layout, many reasons
make travelers who tour Turkey visit the monastery.
Dedicated to Virgin Mary, the monastery is located at the Mela
Mountain in the Trabzon District, near the shores of the Black Sea.
Originally constructed by the Romans in the 4 th century AD,
nevertheless, the structure we view today dates back to the 13 th
century.
The Sumela Monastery consists mainly of the Rock Church. This
is in addition several chapels, kitchens, students’ rooms, and many
other sections. There are many travel packages to Turkey that
include a visit to the Sumela Monastery.
