Considered as one of the best
preserved temples of ancient Egypt, the Temple of Horus in Edfu is considered
the 2nd largest Pharaonic temple in the country. Today, a visit to
the temple is a must for any tourists who spend their vacations in Egypt and
who are fond of history and ancient architecture.
Located around 120 kilometers to the
North of Aswan, many travelers who tour Egypt visit the temple as part of their
visits’ programs in their Nile cruises from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa.
The construction of the Temple of
Horus in Edfu took two centuries to be completed. It was in fact established by
the Ptolemies as they wanted to have an architectural achievement that is
similar to the Karnak Temple in Luxor.
The Ptolemies chose Horus to be the
main god of the temple as his worship was quite popular in the period of the
construction of the temple, between the 3rd and the 1st
centuries BC. Today it is one of the most memorable ancient monuments that
welcomes numerous tourists who spend their vacations in Egypt.
